WATER RESOURCES
MANAGEMENT AND IRRIGATION
Introduction
Agricultural development depends on reliable moisture supply and suitable
soils. The potential from rainfall has to be realized before the introduction of
irrigation.
Implementation of sustainable irrigation schemes and improved agricultural
practices are the key to development and upkeep of food security. To exploit the
potentials and establish successful ventures, careful planning, design and
management are essential.
In this regard MCE provides services in:

- Infrastructure Development, Including Road Networks, Offices, Workshops,
- Housing, Power Supply and Storage Facilities
- Introducing Systems for Proper Water Management
- Irrigation and Land Drainage System Design

- Project Preparation Appraisal and Evaluation
Major
Projects
MCE has acquired vast experience in
projects related to water and irrigation. Several projects have been
undertaken. Some have been taken up in association with different
international companies.
MCE has extended
its services to many countries among which are Ethiopia, Nigeria, Uganda and
Malawi. Some of the projects are mentioned below.
- MASTER PLAN STUDY FOR LEGEDADI DIRE AND GEFERSA CATCHMENT AREAS
AND BATHYMETRIC SURVEY FOR LEGEDADI, DIRE AND GEFERSA RESERVOIRS, 1999
MCE in association with Tahal
Consulting Engineers Ltd undertook Reservoirs Bathymetric Survey and Catchment
Areas for Legedadi, Dire and Gefersa Reservoir for the Addis Ababa Water
Supply.
- SURVEY AND DESIGN FOR MATTLE FARM, MEKI – ZEWAY IRRIGATION
MCE conducted Topography, soil survey
and mapping of 1,000 ha in Mattle farm, Meki-Zeway area. The study included
detailed topography and soil survey of 300 ha as a basis for designing drip
irrigation system
- FEASIBILITY STUDY AND ENGINEERING DESIGN OF SMALL-SCALE IRRIGATION,
2000 – 2001
Under contract to Oromi a Irrigation Development Authority,
MCE is undertaking field surveys and
preparation of study, design and tender documentation. The work is supported
by IFAD.
- WABI SHEBELE RIVER BASIN INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT MASTER PLAN STUDY, 2002
MCE is sub consultant to WWDSE and is
involved in a multi-disciplinary study dealing with physical resource
assessment, socio-economic surveys, identification of development issues and
constraints, definition of strategies and elaboration of phased development.
The study will be undertaken in 3 phases and is due for completion in 2004.
- SUPERVISION OF SUGAR CANE PRODUCTION PROJECT, NIGERIA, 1997
Under contract to the African Development Bank,
MCE undertook supervision of sugar cane production project under
irrigated conditions.
